The Amazing Workshop Day

Before we jump into the story, let’s warm up with a few fun questions. Read the questions and answer.

Well done! Continue to the gate.
One afternoon, Eli and I joined a special engineering workshop. The room was full of varied materials and tools! There were ropes, wheels, wooden sticks, stretchy bands, and small lights. Eli explained excitedly
“Today, we’ll do experiments with levers, pulleys, stretchy materials, and even light.” I couldn’t wait to start and learn about each one.
We began with our first experiment: building a simple pulley. Eli handed me a small wheel and a strong rope. She said, “We can lift heavy things more easily with a pulley.
I tied the rope around a basket, and Eli showed me how to loop it over the wheel. We took turns pulling the rope, and the basket rose quickly! I was amazed at how much lighter it felt. I said, “Imagine using this to lift something big!” Eli chirped, “Exactly! Pulleys help with lifting and moving heavy objects.”

Next, we moved to the lever experiment. Eli set a long wooden stick on a block to make a simple lever. She explained, “A lever helps you lift heavy things with less force.”

I put a rock on one end of the stick, and Eli pressed down on the other. The rock lifted into the air! “This is so much fun!” I laughed. Eli nodded, “It’s useful, too. Many machines use levers to work.”

As we finished the lever experiment, I spotted a big box filled with heavy books on the floor. It looked like it hadn’t been moved for a long time. I said, “I wonder what’s inside.” I tried to lift the box, but it was too heavy. I said, feeling a bit frustrated, “Eli, I can’t lift it.”
Eli chirped, “Let’s solve this problem together! We can use the tools we just learned about.” I thought for a moment, but still couldn’t find a solution. Eli suggested, “What if we use the pulley and lever together? It may solve our problem and make it easier.”
We quickly set up a pulley, looping the rope over the wheel and tying it around the heavy box. Then, we placed the lever under the edge of the box. I pulled the rope while Eli pushed down on the lever. Slowly but surely, the box began to lift! I shouted, “It’s working!” feeling proud of our teamwork.
Inside the box, we found extra tools and materials for the next experiments. I said, smiling, “Wow, we couldn’t have done this without using both the pulley and the lever.” Eli said, “Engineering is all about exploring and solving problems.”

As we cleaned the workshop, Eli reminded me, “Riri, remember that even simple tools like pulleys and levers can do big jobs.” I nodded, feeling excited.

I replied, “I want to try more experiments and learn even more!” We left the workshop excited for our next engineering adventure. I couldn’t wait to see what challenges we would solve next.

Now that we’ve read the adventure, read each question and answer
Well done! Continue to the gate.
