One day, we were walking through a little forest. I saw some blackberries on the ground and Eli told me: “Riri, I will pick up four of these fruits. You can pick up the others.”

I leaned over to the bushes and picked some fruits. Eli stopped me. She asked, “Riri, how many did you pick?”

I looked over to my hands and counted. I said, “Four, Eli”.

She smiled, “No Riri, you have six of them in your hands.”

I was shocked, and said “Eli, could you help me learn how to count, please? I don’t know how to do it.”

Eli nodded and told me to put the fruits in the basket. She counted every fruit one by one. We had ten fruits in total. She said, “I pick up four fruits. You need to calculate ten minus four. This means six is left.” So, I thought for a moment. I said, “Six because we had ten in the basket!”
Next, Eli got two blackberries in her hand. Then, she asked: “If I give you these two fruits, how many will there be left?”
I counted and replied: “There will be eight fruits left. Yum!”
We smiled happily with our calculations. Eli said: “Addition means putting numbers together, and subtraction means taking some away!”.
I was happy and said: “That’s right! Now we can use addition and subtraction to solve many problems. Numbers are useful and fun.”
