One morning, I was watching Eli fly, making elegant turns in the air. I was amazed. And I asked her, “Eli, how do you manage to move and turn like that?” Eli came over and told me “I follow paths with angles, curves, and lines, Riri. It’s like drawing geometric shapes while flying.” “Geometric shapes?” I tilted my head. “What are those?” Eli smiled knowingly. “I think it’s the perfect time to visit Professor Poki.”

When we arrived at Poki’s house, we found him drawing some lines on a piece of parchment. As soon as he saw us, he set down his pen. “What brings you both here today?” he asked. Eli explained, “I want to teach Riri about geometry, but I think you’d be the best teacher for this.” “Geometry is fascinating!” Poki said. “It helps us understand the world through shapes, lines, and angles.

Then, he added, “But the best way to learn isn’t just by talking about it—it’s by exploring! I have a challenge for you both. Go to the clearing in the forest and look for real-life examples of parallel lines, perpendicular lines, curves, and angles. Then, come back and tell me what you discover.” Excited by the challenge, Eli and I hurried off into the forest, ready to see geometry in action.

Our search began near the towering trees, where I noticed something on the bark. “Look! These lines never cross,” I pointed out. Eli nodded, “That’s right! These are parallel lines—just like Poki described.” Encouraged, we continued exploring. Soon, we spotted some fallen leaves on the ground. I picked one up and held it out to Eli. “Does this leaf have a geometric shape?” I asked. Eli studied it, “Yes! Look at the edges—we can see three sides and three angles. That makes it a triangle, Riri.”

We walked deeper into the forest, eager to find more. Suddenly, Eli pointed to two branches crossing each other at a perfect right angle. “That’s an example of perpendicular lines,” she explained. I was starting to see shapes everywhere! But just when we thought we had found every possible example, something truly remarkable appeared before us.

A magnificent spider’s web glistened between two trees, its delicate threads forming an intricate pattern of curved and straight lines that converge at the center. “It’s beautiful,” I whispered in awe. “Geometry really is everywhere!” But then we noticed something troubling. The spider that had spun the web was trapped in a drop of tree sap. “Oh no! How do we help the spider without damaging its nest?” I asked anxiously. Eli remained calm, observing the situation. Then her eyes sparkled with an idea. “Riri, grab this small twig and use your robotic precision to hold it near the spider. If we give it a way to climb, it can escape safely.” I did what Eli told me, and just like how she said: the spider escaped without us damaging its nest. I was really happy.

Upon returning, we showed Poki our findings. Suddenly, he started to draw a plan, which was missing several lines. And he told us “Now, using what you’ve learned, complete this drawing by adding angles, parallel and perpendicular lines”. Eli and I set to work

With Eli’s careful tracing and my precise calculations, we carefully constructed a harmonious design, combining geometric elements into a balanced structure. When we were done, Poki said, “You’ve done an excellent job. Geometry is like a language that helps us organize and understand the world.” Eli and I looked at our finished design with pride.

“I never imagined that something as simple as lines and angles could be so interesting,” I said. Poki nodded. “Geometry isn’t just something found in books. You’ve discovered that it exists all around us. And today, you’ve learned to see it through the eyes of true explorers.”

Let’s test what you’ve learned, explorer! Choose the correct answer for each question.

Well done! Continue to the gate.
