One afternoon, Eli arrived home carrying a basket full of new things for me to try.
Eli chirped excitedly, “I brought cheese, vinegar, and kefir!”.

I tilted my head curiously and asked, “What are these things?”
eager to learn about unfamiliar items.

Eli offered me a piece of cheese first. I took a bite, and my eyes lit up.
I exclaimed, “It’s delicious!”.

Eli smiled and said, “Did you know all these foods have something in common?”

I shook my head and asked, “What is it?.”

Eli then explained, “They are all made with the help of microorganisms!”.
I asked very intrigued, “Microorganisms? What are those?”.

Eli put down the cheese and picked up a bottle of vinegar.
She explained, “Microorganisms are tiny living things, so small we can’t see them with our eyes.

In vinegar, bacteria turn alcohol into acetic acid, which gives it that sharp, tangy taste.”
I dipped my finger into the vinegar to taste it.
My face scrunched up, and I laughed. “It’s so sour but kind of cool!”

Next, Eli introduced me to kefir. She gave more details about kefir, “This one is like yogurt, and is full of beneficial microorganisms. In kefir, good bacteria and yeast ferment the milk, making it creamy and packed with nutrients that help our digestive system.”

I tasted it and smiled, “It tastes really good!
But do these microorganisms always help our health? What if they make us sick?”

Eli replied, “Not all microorganisms are good. Some can cause diseases, like the bacteria that give us infections. That’s why it’s important to know which ones are helpful and which can be harmful.” I felt a little nervous and asked, “But how do we tell which are good and which are bad?”.

Eli hopped closer and said, “Good microorganisms, like the ones in kefir and vinegar, help us digest food and protect our body from harmful bacteria. Think of them as tiny invisible helpers!”

I thought for a moment and looked at the food in front of me with new curiosity. “So, the good microorganisms are like a shield for our body?” I asked. “Exactly!” Eli chirped, nodding. “They support our health and fight off the bad ones.”

I gazed at the cheese, vinegar, and kefir with newfound respect.
“These microorganisms are like tiny magicians!” I said with a grin.

Eli smiled and replied, “Yes, Riri. Not all microorganisms are dangerous. Some play a vital role in making our food and keeping us healthy.”
I nodded, feeling grateful for the invisible helpers. “I’ll never look at cheese or kefir the same way again,” I said.
Eli and I shared a laugh, excited to keep learning about the fantastic world of microorganisms.
