It was a windy day. The grey clouds were blocking the sun. While we were going home, we passed by a beautiful lake. We saw a mother duck. It was swimming with her three ducklings.
Suddenly, it started to rain. Two little ducks took shelter on their mother’s wings, one on each wing. The third duckling stayed out in the rain. I said: “Look! The ducklings set up agroup of two.
But there’s one little duck left”.
Eli explained that three is an odd number.
I forgot about the ducklings. So, I asked: “What is an odd number?”.
Eli replied, “They are numbers. When the numbers are organized into groups of two, there is always one left”
I looked back at the pond. I saw that a late baby duck had joined the others. There were now four ducklings.
I started clapping my hands and I said: “Look, the late duckling is pushing the one left alone.”
Eli smiled and explained, “You see, now the mother duck has two ducklings on each wing.
Four is an even number. When organized in groups of two, there are none left”.
I was confused and tried to understand how we know if a number is odd or even.
Fortunately, Eli had an easy answer. Numbers ending in 0,2, 4, 6, or 8 are even.
And those that end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9 are odd.
I knew the numbers but learned the odd and even numbers today.
I started to count to 9. And we both went home talking about odd and even numbers.
